My desk happened to be from the Depression Era, from 1930s. It was completely ripped off from its mahogany veneer so I had this bare wood to play with.

I decided to do a limed look by using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™. I picked Old White paint to do this.
In this technique you just paint in small sections and wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth before the paint dries. Here is a short video about it.
After I painted and wiped off the whole desk, I applied Annie Sloan wax to seal the paint.
Here is how it looks now.
